New facelift to bring practicality

Hockey: After much success the Gympie Hockey Club is getting a much-needed facelift, making things more practical.

With building to start at the end of April or early May, club president Ben Fitzpatrick said there would hopefully be no disruptions caused.

"We will manage things once the construction starts but at this point I cannot see it (the construction) being an issue,” he said.

The club received a $150,000 grant from the Queensland Government to upgrade the clubhouse and Fitzpatrick said the money would go a long way.

"I do not think this money will cover the whole lot of the upgrades but it will be a big help,” he said.

Fitzpatrick said the canteen and control room would switch sides, making things more practical.

"Currently, the canteen is as you enter the club near the fields and the control room is on the opposite side, under the bar,” he said.

"We are going to move the canteen and control room which should make everything more functional.

"There is a cold room under the bar which makes more sense for the canteen to be shifted, plus a kitchen which will open things up.”

The switching of the canteen and control room are not the only upgrades. Toilets, change rooms, a conference room and a first aid room will also be added into the layout along with extra storage.

"Any conferences and training we carry out is being held in the bar because that is the only place where we have a television,” he said.

"We are expecting to get the drawings for the upgrade back next week and a tender will be put out, with construction starting after that.”

With the season already started, Fitzpatrick is hoping the new changes will make things more user-friendly.

"Hopefully it finishes towards the end of this year and the new clubhouse will be in full swing by next year,” he said.
