New Devils coach eager to get his team in good shape

RUGBY LEAGUE: The Gympie Devils are hopeful of a top season as Michael Buckley is welcomed as the new A-grade coach for 2019.

The Devils struggled with injuries this year but are confident Buckley's experience will set them on the right path.

He comes to the Devils from the Sunshine Coast Falcons' under-20s and is looking to improve their fitness and skills ahead of kick-off in March.

"I'm looking to create a good environment for the boys,” Buckley said.

"I want them to be more prepared this year so they don't get set back by injuries during the season.”

"I want to upgrade their fitness and their skill and if we can go the whole season without an injury that will be good.”

Club president Darren Burns is glad the Devils are in Buckley's hands.

"His experience and skill as a coach made it a no-brainer,” Burns said.

"He is from Gympie, so a coach with that much experience coaching in his hometown made him an obvious choice for the Devils.

"I think he will be a great fit.”

The Devils' pre-season kicked off last month.

Buckley said he was impressed with the turn-out and the talent.

"All the boys looked eager to get stuck in to it.”

"There is definitely a lot of work to be done before the season starts but I think everyone is prepared to put in the work.

"I'm excited for the season and am looking forward to see what the boys can do.”
