$14m Southside complex approved
ALL systems are go at the site of AHC Limited’s new $18 million shopping centre complex on Gympie’s Southside.
AHC chairman Ian MacLeod said approvals for road works and parking fell into place this week.
It has been a long road for the developers, who waited almost two years since purchasing the land adjacent the Jockey Club Hotel, to receive the official okay to build the complex. After gaining initial approvals there were some issues but finally all has been resolved, Mr MacLeod said.
When the project is complete AHC will have invested $14 million into the complex, after purchasing the land for $4 million.
Mr MacLeod said where feasible as much of the $14 million as possible would go to local contractors.
So far the developers have only received positive feedback from residents who were excited to see the development under way.
“The whole community and council have been helpful. Cr Ian Petersen has been extremely helpful and has bent over backwards to help,” he said.
The site was recently cleared and the project has moved underground while the sewerage lines are being constructed.
Mr MacLeod said the rain didn’t set back contractors, who scraped off the top level slippery surface and continued working.
“We hope to be out of the ground by Christmas so wet weather won’t hold us up. We are really excited and getting a lot of help.
“Inquiries for tenancy have picked up dramatically,” he said.
If all goes to plan and the weather stays fine, we could be picking up a bargain in the centre’s 27 speciality shops and Woolworths Supermarket by this time next year.
