Top tennis stars to play at Gympie

COME and see some of Australia’s best tennis players in action this weekend, is the message from Warren Arnell.

Arnell is Tournament Director of the Gympie Gold veterans’ tennis tournament being held this weekend at Queens Park and Reg English tennis centres.

The tournament has attracted 135 top players from all over Queensland and New South Wales, including members of the Australian team to contest the World Senior Teams Titles in Mexico next month.

Gympie’s own Kym Ireland is one of those playing this weekend who will be competing in Mexico.

Arnell said it would be well worth coming and watching her play.

“Kym is a very good player,” he said.

“She hits the ball very hard.

“If you want to see how an Australian representative plays then now’s your chance.”

Play in the round robin tournament starts today at 1pm at Queens Park and will continue over the weekend, with play at Reg English starting at 8am tomorrow and Sunday morning before reverting to Queens Park in the afternoons.

Arnell said having such an important tournament in Gympie was a real boon for the town with so many people using caravan parks, motels and restaurants over the weekend.

Admission to the venues is free, and bar and canteen facilities are available.
