Australia risks climate ‘pariah’ label

AUSTRALIA will be treated as a "pariah" at coming global climate change talks if a new emissions reduction target does not keep pace with the nation's major trading partners, a leading scientist has said.

Climate Council chief councillor Tim Flannery made the comment after releasing a report urging a new target of 40-60% by 2030.

He said the "eyes of the world" were on Australia, given the nation's role as one of the world's largest coal producers, a key industry adding to carbon emissions.

"We risk becoming a pariah if we don't join the rest of the world in doing our fair share to tackle climate change," he said.

The council's report found global action on emissions was "accelerating" and major trading partners China and the United States were "questioning Australia's credibility" on action to curb emissions.
