Mustang is star of fly-in

THE Great Eastern Fly-in at Evans Head is finally returning next weekend with expectations that it will be bigger than ever.

With all manner of aircraft converging on the Evans Head Aerodrome, the fly-in's 21st anniversary is promising to be a true coming-of-age.

One of the classic planes to star at the event is the P-51 Mustang, the famed Second World War dogfighter, that will show off its prow- ess as part of the weekend's air display program.

There'll also be helicopters, ultralights, motor gliders and vintage general aviation planes on show.

The event will not be limited to the skies, with a debut boat show including a full-scale Viking ship alongside a "show and shine" of classic cars, bikes and trucks on Sunday.

The annual fly-in has become Evans Head's signature event and rivals Casino Beef Week as the Richmond Valley's second-biggest economic booster after Primex.

Great Eastern Fly-in president Gai Taylor said anticipation for this year's event was building and organisers were confident of producing the best show in its history.

"We've got our fingers crossed for perfect weather, and so far the long-range forecast looks good," Ms Taylor said. "It's very much a family weekend; there's something for everyone - the market on Saturday, the local car clubs' show and shine on Sunday, the aircraft, plenty of food, music and kids' activities."

Kids will also be able to "climb all over" the Rural Fire Service trucks and the Westpac helicopter will make an appearance.

Entry is a gold coin donation to ensure the event continues well into the future.
