EMBATTLED Gympie MP David Gibson announced the end of his political career tonight, revealing that he was experiencing a nervous breakdown.

Mr Gibson has been in the firing line since revelations he stole $7000 from the Army in 1999.

Mr Gibson released this statement about 6pm.

"The recent public revelations regarding my past have taken a significant toll on my physical and mental wellbeing. This afternoon I sought professional psychological support. It has been identified that I am experiencing a nervous breakdown.

"On the advice of my health professionals I am taking sick leave and I have advised the Speaker and Premier of this.

"For the sake of my health and my family I am also announcing today that I will be departing from political life and will not be running as a candidate at the next state election.

"I hope that once I recover from my current health issues that I will be able to continue in my role as the Member for Gympie until the end of this term of parliament.

"I request that the privacy of my family and myself is respected during this time of recovery."

The man who started everything, Scott Elms, declined to comment on last night's developments, saying he would need time to digest the information.

Mr Elms has said on numerous occasions he will not run for the State seat of Gympie if Mr Gibson steps down.
