MP calls on Queensland Rail for Rattler funds
MP TONY Perrett yesterday called for Queensland Rail to come to the rescue of "the struggling Mary Valley Rattler".
Mr Perrett told The Gympie Times he had asked in State Parliament for Deputy Premier and Transport and Infrastructure Minister Jackie Trad to consider using Queensland Rail to restore the line and stock of the Mary Valley Heritage Railway.
"Given that the government will not support the previous LNP government's commitment of $2.6 million to assist the iconic railway, it makes sense that QR could come to the rescue," Mr Perrett said.
"If the government abandons the current LNP plan to rescue the railway it still has the responsibility for maintenance of the corridor and station buildings.
"It therefore just makes practical and prudent sense to help the iconic rail, which is a major and defining feature for attracting tourists to this region.
"I would also like to know what has happened to the $2 million which the previous government had set aside in last year's budget to give to the Rattler Railway Company once a business plan was prepared and accepted.
"There was no mention of the railway in this year's Budget and I am concerned that the funds have been lost in the sleight-of-hand which has meant Gympie has been ignored in this year's Budget."
