More public sector job cuts expected

THE axe has continued to fall on Queensland's public sector with a further 1500 jobs slashed in the past month and further mass cuts expected.

After previously declaring he had no figure on how many jobs the government had culled in its attempt to decrease the size of the public sector, Premier Campbell Newman has confirmed about 5000 public servants have lost their jobs.

Mr Newman spelled out at a Council of Australian Governments meeting in Canberra on Wednesday that there would be more jobs to go.

"So far, 5000 people have lost their jobs, and there's going to be thousands more to get our financial position sorted out and we have to make really tough choices right now," he said.

On June 29, dubbed Black Friday in the public service, about 3500 positions were culled.

Mr Newman has signalled 20,000 positions could be gone after a Commission of Audit found Queensland's public service had grown by 41% in the past decade.

Some of the biggest job cuts have come from the education, training and employment sector where 144 positions were axed with the Skilling Queenslanders for Work program.

Forty jobs also went after the State Government decided to close a correctional centre west of Toowoomba last week.

Over 500 jobs are rumoured to go from the agricultural sector and thousands within Queensland Rail.

The Fraser Coast has not escaped the job culling wrath either, loosing four jobs within the disability services sector and more in the emergency service sphere.
