Black out causes delay at Jack Stokes Oval
TECHNICAL problems caused a play delay on Saturday night at Jack Stokes Oval during the Northern Outlaws and Caboolture Snakes league match.
A blackout three minutes into the second half stopped play as one light went out, followed by three others.
Gympie Devils president Jim Bougoure said the lights shorted out and were turned off for 25 minutes while a repair was attempted.
He said both teams decided to play on with only three poles lighting the field.
Northern Outlaws co-captain Kurt Fleming said the outage had happened a few times in the past while he was playing with the Gympie Devils in 2011 and 2012, and that the club had since installed new posts.
Games Development Officer Darren Burns said the old lights were replaced at the beginning of the 2014 season, making the malfunction unexpected.
Burns said the problem forcing the poles to be replaced was too much power flowing through one circuit.
After the lights cooled down Saturday night, they were turned back on and a crackling noise could be heard.
Burns said the Gympie Rugby League Club would look further into fixing the lighting problem, hoping for a quick resolution with more matches due to be played later this week.
