UPDATE:  A 21-YEAR-OLD man is in hospital under police guard after he reportedly set fire to himself in a bank building in Melbourne suburb Springvale. 

Victoria Police said they first responded to calls about the incident about 11.30am. 

Police told media in Melbourne the man had some form of accelerant with him. 

A total 27 people were injured, with six of those in a serious condition. 

Ambulance Victoria said the six seriously injured people included five men and one woman. 

UPDATE:  Ambulance Victoria says it has treated 27 people after a man reportedly set himself on fire in a Commonwealth Bank building in Melbourne. 

Six people were taken to the Alfred Hospital with serious burns and 21 other people were taken to local hospitals with breathing difficulties.  Ambulance Victoria said those 21 victims were all in a stable condition. 

EARLIER: A MAN has reportedly set fire to a Commonwealth Bank in Melbourne's south-east, with dozens of people taken to hospital, including four in a serious condition, police have said.

Police said they responded to reports a man had set fire to the bank on Springvale Rd, Springvale, about 11:30am.

"The man has been taken to hospital in a serious condition under police guard," a police spokesperson said.

Ambulance Victoria said five people in the building suffered serious burns and were taken to The Alfred Hospital.

Sixteen others, including two children, have breathing problems and were taken to local hospitals.
