Police station targeted by phone scammer - twice

POLICE have issued a scam alert after a person pretending to be from Telstra Technical Support called Moranbah station in an attempt to persuade them to hand over sensitive information and money.

Senior Constable Steve Smith said an officer at the station received a direct phone call from a person who claimed to be from a phone company.

"The scam caller attempted to persuade the police officer in question that there was an internet connection technical issue which only he could fix - remotely and at a cost of course," Snr Const Smith said.

"It was clearly explained to the scam caller that he may have poorly selected his target on that day.

"Once the penny dropped, our scam caller tried a different tact and began to communicate his point using only obscene language."

Snr Const Smith said after the caller hung up, he called the station a second time.

"They called back once again to explain their thoughts and opinions on law enforcement globally, using the same obscene communication method to highlight their ideas," he said.

In this example, the officer did not allow the caller remote access to the computer so no money or sensitive information was stolen.

Snr Const Smith said residents need to stay aware as this is not always the case.

"Police received a further report from a local retired resident of Beaconsfield who received the same style of call from a phone scammer on November 2," he said.

"In these circumstances, she did lose money, many thousands of dollars in fact and sensitive information was indeed compromised."
