Mojo to prowl, growl and preach the blues

MOJO Webb has been described as Australia's most authentic blues artist and he is on his way to the Royal Mail Hotel in Goodna on Saturday afternoon.

Redbank-based blues musician and promoter Cath Butler said Mojo would rock the pub with a performance that epitomises what the genre is all about.

"Mojo really feels it when he gets up on stage," she said.

"He prowls, he growls, he hollers and points the finger. He really preaches the blues like you would expect it to be done.

"He is the most authentic blues artist we have in this country and so exciting to watch.

"He is an incredible live performer but he is quite shy when you talk to him. I always say to him, 'Do you have switch that you flick when you go on stage?'

"His whole personality changes and he takes on this whole other being when he steps on stage."

Mojo alternates between playing gigs solo and with his Mojo Webb Band where Cooje Timms (drums) and JB Lewis (bass and guitar) make up a dynamic trio.

He will be playing solo on Saturday but Butler said that will in no way lessen his impact.

"Mojo is a real wizard on the blues guitar," she said.

"He is a multi-instrumentalist.

"The first CD he brought out was called The Burden and he went away to an old farm house for about three months where he recorded it himself and played every single instrument himself on the CD. He is just a huge talent.

"He is one of my favourite blues performers in this country and I can't for the life of me understand why he isn't a massive star."

Mojo's national reputation as an outstanding blues musician has now gone global

"Last year he represented Queensland in the International Blues Challenge which is held in Memphis every year," Butler said.

"Hundreds of blues bands come from all over the world to compete and he was a semi-finalist in that.

"His latest CD called The Cat was also selected in the top 25 CDs of the year by the American Blues Foundation."

Webb will play from noon until 3pm on Saturday and will be followed by the Mason Rack Band.

The band will play at the Byron Bay Blues Festival this year and is headed up by Mason Rack.
