Workers help boy in fight for life

Mitchell's wish comes true

IT'S been a tough year for the Luders family as 10 year old Mitchell continues to battle one of the rarest and most aggressive forms of childhood cancer.

Because of this, there's been an outpouring of support from within the Gladstone community.

When the Make a Wish Foundation couldn't grant Mitchell's wish of a trip to Japan, the community stepped in to help.

Late last month, an amazing donation of $10,000 from UGL construction and maintenance contractors ensured that Mitchell and his family make the trip to see where Pokémon was created.

Yesterday afternoon, Mitchell's siblings and Grandmother were presented with the donation, by UGL Business Manager David Zropf.

Mr Zropf said the donation is a result of the safe work practices of a construction team based and the Boyne Smelters.

"For every day of safe work, $40 is put into a charity fund," he said.

"At the end of the year, it was down to the guys to choose where the money went, and who better then a young local kid who's doing it tough."

Alvin Amano, Project Manager for UGL said that Mitchell's wish was put on the table along with several other worthy causes.

When it was put to a vote, it was almost unanimously for Mitchell," he said.

"Because he's a young boy and many of us are fathers, we really wanted to help out his parents and grant his wish."

Mitchell's older brother Dylan said the donation was overwhelming.

"For our family, it's another step closer to be together," he said.

"Dad works away and Mum's with Mitchell in Brisbane so me and Chelsea are living with nanna at the moment."
Mitchell's grandmother Merrian Ross said that the family knows little Mitchell will never be cured, but is aiming for remission."

Japan keeps him motivated," Ms Ross said.

"The family haven't been together for nine months and this trip to Japan is the chance of a lifetime."
