Mission to Italy

ITALY beckons Harley Ingleby where next month he'll attempt to win a second ASP World Longboard Championship.

With fellow Northern Beaches competitor Jared Neal his travelling companion, Ingleby will head to Levanto for the Bear Pro, hoping for "a bit of luck" and the right waves to carry him from third place to top spot on the ladder.

"The Mediterranean Sea can be a bit flat and I'm hoping for some swell," he said.

"We're taking a couple of smaller boards which will suit the conditions, but in those waves it becomes much harder to impress."

In round one at Arugam Bay, Sri Lanka, Ingleby finished third behind American pair Duane Desoto and Taylor Jensen and they are again the ones to chase down.

Ingleby appeared to have a win sewn up in the first heat but it all went awry in the semi-finals.

"Everything came down to the final few seconds and they got me on the buzzer," he said. "Jared finished that trip in equal-ninth spot and the Italian trip will be good for him with a chance to up his points and seeding."

In the interim, there's one more job to do before heading to Europe.

"In a couple of days I'll be heading to China for the women's World final," Ingleby said.

"It's being held at a little island off the south coast called Hainan and I've been invited to act as contest director."

Meanwhile, Ingleby's new Solitary Islands Surf School is going gangbusters.

"Things are going from strength to strength and it's all great fun," he said.
