Mini tornado rips through housing estate at Mooloolaba

A MINI tornado has swept through a housing estate at Mooloolaba.

The Emerald Springs estate was hit this morning, with fierce winds uprooting trees and causing minor damage to homes.

It is reported at least a dozen trees were ripped from the ground as the blast tore its way through the estate before heading up the Buderim-Mooloolaba Rd.

At 11.45am, police tweeted that  radar imagery showed an intense band of activity near Rainbow Beach, moving southwards.

"This could cause significant damage or destruction to homes and property in localised areas," the following tweet warned.

A wind gust of 122kmh was recorded  at Double Island Point at 10.45am,

Police warned of further wind speeds greater then 125kmh and the likelihood of more tornadoes.
