Miner sets area abuzz with plans

THE thought of Eclipse Metals moving into the Mary Valley has certainly got the locals talking.

The mining company is chasing manganese, a metal used in conjunction with iron to make strong steel and disposable batteries.

It turns out one of the positives for Eclipse is that there is a railway line leading straight though their exploration area.

If all goes to plan the Mary Valley line will be a vital link enabling them to get ore from mines in the Amamoor region to Brisbane. It's incredible to think the line could once again become an important piece of Queensland infrastructure.

The line was opened to Kandanga in 1914 and became an important economic lifeline for our region, transporting goods to and from market.

By the late '80s there were very few diesel locomotives using the track and with the demise of the pineapple industry, it eventually closed.

Things may now be set to change on the track.
