Three-pointer a boon for Boomers

PATTY Mills has beaten the buzzer to deliver the Aussie Boomers an 82-80 win over the previously unbeaten Russians in the men's basketball tournament.

Mills (pictured), a point guard with the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA, drilled the winning three-pointer just seconds after Vitaliy Fridzon had put Russia 80-79 in front through two free throws with only 4.1secs left on the clock.

The winning shot fell through the hoop as time expired and earned Mills and his teammates a shot at playing the star-studded USA team in the quarter-finals at 7.15am tomorrow.

Mills said he was always going to take the shot.

"I was open and I had the mindset if I was open, I would shoot it," he said.

"It felt really good. It's one of those shots you dream of making at the Olympic Games and to do it against a good team like Russia is great."

Mills said the Aussies had to believe the US was not invincible.

"We have got to (believe we can beat them)," he said.
