‘Menace on roads’ jailed for ice-fuelled crime spree

AN ice addict was in the grip of addiction when he went on a crime spree, selling drugs for money and sex and driving while under the influence, a court has been told.

Gregory Walter Baker, 53, faced Brisbane District Court on Thursday, where he pleaded guilty to supplying ice and marijuana and 38 summary charges that included property, drug and driving offences.

The Stanthorpe-born carpenter stole petrol from service stations, drove under the influence of ice and sold drugs between August 2018 and April 2019 across the Brisbane area.

Prosecutor Brendan White said Baker was a "menace on Queensland roads" with an 11-page criminal traffic history who had been disqualified from driving multiple times.

"I think he should buy a pushbike," Judge William Everson said.

Defence barrister Jacob Robson said Baker had battled an ice addiction since he was 18 and while the roadside drug test came back positive for methylamphetamine, he had not been driving dangerously.

Mr Robson said if released from jail, Baker hoped to return to Stanthorpe to work on his brother's apple orchard.

Judge William Everson accepted Baker was a "street-level dealer" with a "very unflattering" criminal history.

"Your offending was quite brazen, because there were numerous entries of just driving off without paying for fuel," he said.

"Your offending, although on a scale which can only be described as immense, was nonetheless at a very low level."

Baker was sentenced to two and a half years' jail.

After already serving 11 months in jail, Baker was granted immediate parole.
