Men of Leagueto host Kick Off meeting this week
THE Gympie branch of the Men of League foundation is hosting a Kick Off meeting on Thursday. Men of League spokesman Greg Poutney said the guest speakers on the night would be Gary Balkin and Chris Johns
Balkin started playing rugby league as a schoolboy in Gympie.
He played reserve and first grade for Brothers in Brisbane and in 1964 was the leading try scorer in the Brisbane first grade competition.
After retiring due to injury and work pressures, Gary was involved with Souths in Brisbane as sponsor and also as patron for 14 years.
In 1987, Gary was one of four people who founded the Brisbane Broncos and appointed Wayne Bennett as coach.
He remains a life member of the Broncos.
Gary has been a teacher and journalist and is now is a successful hotelier and restaurateur who has won many awards in the hospitality industry.
Johns played 254 first grade games in the NRL and overseas.
He played for St George and Castleford (England) before becoming a foundation player for Brisbane in 1988. He retired in 1996 after playing 10 Origin matches for NSW and nine Tests for Australia.
In 1989, he became the first Brisbane-based player to gain selection for NSW in a State of Origin match.
Johns then went into administration in 1997 when he became the chief executive for the Melbourne Storm.
