MELBOURNE Storm coach Craig Bellamy is thankful Suliasi Vunivalu didn't cause any damage in a bizarre attempt to hurdle two opponents.

Vunivalu was reported for contrary conduct after he charged at two Sydney Roosters and leapt in the air with knees tucked, narrowly avoiding a major collision.

The record-breaking winger was offered a $1100 fine for the incident that left his coach gobsmacked.

"I've seen a couple things like that closer to a try line but I'm not quite sure what Suli was trying to do there, probably ask 'Suli'," Bellamy said.

"It was probably a bit of a brain fade or snap or whatever he'd like to call it.

 

"It was a pretty big play in the game to be quite honest, I think they scored on the end of that penalty so hopefully he learns a lesson and he doesn't do it again."

But Bellamy was hopeful Vunivalu would escape any further sanction.

"I don't think he actually hit anyone so I'm not quite sure what the charge is," Bellamy said.

"Agree it's a penalty, without a doubt ... I don't know what they're going to charge him with so if he does get charged we'll have a look at it then.

 

"I don't think he done any damage so whether they charge that or not I don't know.

"I think they're probably scratching their heads at home at the moment wondering what it was."

Roosters coach Trent Robinson bit his tongue when asked about the Vunivalu cannonball.

"How do you comment on that? You just haven't seen it in the game before," Robinson said.

"It's not for me to comment, it's for you guys to write about so, what do you say? It was something that you shouldn't see in rugby league."

Storm defended stoutly last night but all too often failed to capitalise on possession and territory gains.

Billy Slater, Cooper Cronk and Vunivalu committed costly ball-handling errors in tricky conditions.
