Medicinal marijuana now legal in Australia

FROM today it will be possible to apply to grow medicinal marijuana in Australia.

Changes to the law will mean the Office of Drug Control (ODC) can accept licences to cultivate cannabis for medical reasons, reports the Canberra Times

This combined with a change to the Therapeutic Goods Act taking medicinal marijuana out the act's most harshly controlled schedules means major changes to the role of the drug in Australia.

So far it will only be the very ill who will be eligible to be prescribed the drug and it remains up to the states to set up their own individual legislation.

It will still be illegal to grow marijuana for anything other than medicinal purposes.

Little is known about the efficacy of medicinal marijuana because it has so far been illegal to test.
