Mayor of white town quits over racist post

THE mayor of a small West Virginia town has quit in response to a huge backlash after she supported a racist comment on Facebook about First Lady Michelle Obama.

After Donald Trump became president-elect, Pamela Ramsey Taylor posted "It will be so refreshing to have a classy, beautiful, dignified First Lady back in the White House. I'm tired of seeing a Ape in heels”, referring to Mr Trump's wife, Melania replacing Ms Obama.

"Just made my day Pam,” Beverly Whaling responded.

Clay council accepted mayor Beverly Whaling's resignation yesterday.

Ms Taylor is director at Clay County Development Corp and told media on Monday she was put on leave.

Councillor Jason Hubbard condemned the "horrific” post and said "racial intolerance isn't what this community is about”, apologising on behalf of the town to anyone who was offended, including Ms Obama.

Ms Whaling issued a written apology to news media outlets saying her comment was not intended to be racist, "I was referring to my day being made for change in the White House!”

Clay County voted 77% for Donald Trump.

At the 2010 census it had fewer than 10,000 people; was 98.8% white; and males were paid 1.73 times as much as females. The town of Clay had 491 residents and none was black.
