Matt raring to go
WARWICK driver Matt Loy is excited at the prospect of competing against drivers from all over Australia and New Zealand in the Mackays Furniture Transport Junior Dragfest this weekend at the Warwick Dragway.
Loy was runner-up last year in one event and is hoping to improve his placing this year.
"There are four drivers bringing their dragsters from New Zealand," Loy said.
"It is good to see people travelling so far to compete in Warwick."
Loy reckons he has a bit of an advantage with local knowledge.
"Some of the best juniors in Australia will be here and they will get a chance on Saturday morning to drive on the track before competition starts," Loy said.
Loy hasn't competed in New Zealand but is hoping to one day.
The 16-year-old Warwick State High School student has been competing in junior dragsters since the age of eight.
"I am now driving my third junior dragster and the fastest.
"Our best is 7.9 seconds for the 1/8 mile (200m) at Warwick Raceway, which is an average speed of 140kmh.
"The speed is pretty good when you are so close to the ground."
He won't just turn up on Saturday hoping for the best.
Loy has been working on the car each night this week with his father John.
"The car is ready to roll on Saturday morning," he said.
Mickey Loy will also compete in a field of 45 drivers.
Drivers will compete in three age groups, with three events in each age group.

Sunday 10am to 3pm
