Gympie hopes for Matilda arrival

GYMPIE Mayor Ron Dyne said he wasn't sure when Commonwealth Games icon Matilda was coming to Gympie as he hadn't been contacted by Matilda Fuels. But he thought the giant Kangaroo may be arriving soon.

Cr Dyne said he thought having the icon in the Gympie Region would be a highlight.

“We need to see Matilda here sooner rather than later,” he said.

Originally the mascot was coming to Gympie as Gympie Regional Council was able to approve its placement last year much quicker than the Gold Coast City Council.

Matilda Fuels hadn't returned The Gympie Times calls yesterday afternoon, but a few weeks ago a spokesperson said they hadn't decided what they were doing with Matilda.

The Gold Coast's approval for Matilda's placement along the Gold Coast Highway, last month, was reversed yesterday when councillors backed a rescission motion based on the grounds that the mascot would set a precedent for more distractions.
