Mary Valley Stags firm as a genuine finals threat

RUGBY LEAGUE: It may only be early days but the Mary Valley stags are continuing to firm as a genuine premiership threat on the back of their fifth straight win.

While the Kandanga- based club were far from their best at the weekend, they were still able to secure a 26-14 win over cross-town rivals Pomona-Cooran.

Dean Bull continued his solid form for his new club, while veteran half Chad Parker was instrumental.

The Stags will have the weekend off before taking on Noosa at Noosa next weekend.

The Devils on the other hand were taken to task by a rampaging Beerwah Bulldogs.

In their 2017 Albert Park debut, the Devils failed to get off the ground early and were punished for several mistakes in their own 30.

The Devils have won one game in 2017.

In other rugby league news, seasoned hooker Troy Mendham produced an inspiring display to help Maroochydore overcome Caloundra in their top-of-the-table division 1 match on Saturday.

The 27-year-old was able to keep the Sharks on the back foot during the reigning premiers' 28-24 display at Wises Rd.

"The good thing with Troy is his decision-making in attack,” coach Brett Winkler said.

"He's been around long enough for now and knows when to run or when to play and on Saturday night, his dummy half running was very good. He really punched in there.”

But it's not just with ball in hand that Mendham poses problems.

Mendham is a former state league player for the Sunshine Coast.
