Mary of Cross plaque considered

A PLAQUE marks Mary MacKillop’s birthplace in Fitzroy, Melbourne and many Gympie people would like to see something similar commemorating her link with the early settlement of Monkland.

Local Catholic parishioner Jack Crough said Mary MacKillop’s time in Gympie was worthy of some sort of permanent memorial and he thought a plaque on the site of the original St Joseph’s school and church was a good idea.

Monkland resident Marie Farenden, who lives a stone throw away from the site on the corner of Brisbane Road and Araluen Terrace, said her mother attended the old school, then run by the Sisters of Mercy.

Mrs Farenden thinks people would like to visit the location.

“Just to think that Mary MacKillop was in Gympie, that she spent time in our town, is special,” she said.
