Mary idea 'a plan, not a promise'

A SUGGESTION is not a promise, as federal Wide Bay MP Warren Truss claimed to have discovered with regard to the Mary Valley renewal process.

Mr Truss said yesterday that federal Environment Minister, Peter Garrett seemed to have walked away from his suggested special regional recovery plan for the Valley, post-Traveston Crossing dam.

Mr Truss said Mr Garrett had suggested the Federal Government would provide genuine help for the Valley to help it recover from “a three-and-a-half year onslaught by the Bligh Government.

“In his press release dated December 2, 2009, Mr Garrett stated that his department was considering the establishment of a regional recovery plan for the area.

“I wrote to Mr Garrett last year seeking details of the offer (and) four months later, I have now received a reply.

“He says the Mary Valley will have to compete with other communities for funding under the Caring for our Country program. After three years of deception, heartache and squander, the Mary Valley needs comprehensive economic, social and environmental assistance,” Mr Truss said.
