Marquez seals third MotoGP crown

MOTORSPORT: Spanish rider Marc Marquez has claimed his third MotoGP championship following his win at the Japanese Grand Prix.

Despite there being three rounds left in the season, the next being at Phillip Island next weekend, the 23-year-old has an unassailable lead in the standings.

The Honda rider's biggest championship rivals, Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo, both crashed out at Motegi, ending their chances.

Australian rider Jack Miller also failed to finish the race, crashing on lap two, while fellow Aussie Mike Jones finished a lap down on the leaders in his debut race.

Marquez needed Rossi to finish 15th or lower and Lorenzo fourth or lower in the race to win the championship.

Rossi slid off the track only a few laps in, and fellow Yamaha rider Lorenzo, who was in second place for most of the race, fell off his bike only four laps from the finish.

From there Marquez went on to record his sixth win of the season with ease.

Marquez's title is his fifth overall, having claimed the 125cc world championship in 2010 and Moto2 world championship in 2012 before he ascended to the premier class of motorcycle racing.

He was an instant success, winning his first two MotoGP titles in 2013 and 2014.
