Many migrants perish in high seas
AS CONDITIONS worsen for migrants crossing the Mediterranean heading for Europe, about 100 people are feared to have drowned off Libya. General Ayoub Qassem of the Libyan navy said a boat carrying 126 people from Garabulli sank in high waves and only 20 people had been rescued. The UN said 2016 had become the deadliest year for migrants crossing the sea, with an estimated 3800 deaths so far. The UN refugee agencies and other aid groups say people smugglers are using even flimsier inflatable rafts than before and many are heavily overloaded.
