Deckhand drowns after fall from boat

A MOOLOOLABA deckhand has drowned after falling from his boat in the Wharf Marina, near UnderWater World.

The 63-year-old's body was found around 10.30am on Tuesday by work colleagues who were investigating why the man was late for work.

"He was last seen around 5.30pm by a male friend. It would appear he either slipped and hit his head falling in, or had a cardiac arrest and drowned," Sergeant Steve McDonald, of the Mooloolaba Police Beat, said.

"The alarm was raised when he didn't show up for work.''

Police are attempting to contact the man's wife, who does not live locally, and family members.

"An autopsy will be performed to confirm the cause of death but at this stage of the investigation there's nothing suspicious," Sgt McDonald said

An UnderWater World spokesman said thoughts were with the man's family.

"We were saddened to hear of the discovery of man's body, and our condolences are with the man's family," the spokesman said.
