Man on sex charge admits fathering child

A 25-YEAR-OLD man charged with carnal knowledge of a 15-year-old girl has admitted to fathering her child.

The man told at Ipswich Magistrates Court the girl was "the mother of my child" and the "the only reason I stuck around after I found out her age, was for my son".

Police arrested the man at Kalbar on Wednesday and he was charged with carnal knowledge of a child under 16, possessing child exploitation material and four counts of indecent treatment of a child under 16 (film).

The man appeared at Ipswich Magistrates Court on Thursday morning to apply for bail, which police prosecutions opposed.

The man read the formal opposition document, in which the victim was alleged to be a 15-year-old girl.

He said the relationship wasn't about "sex" after he found out her age.

The court was told the man was already on bail for rape, stalking and using a carriage service to menace when he committed the latest six offences it was alleged.

He had been committed to stand trial in the District Court for the original three offences on November 23 last year.

Magistrate Michael Quinn refused bail, saying the man posed an unacceptable risk to the community and his own safety.

"The prosecution has a strong case - should you be convicted of these offences a term of prison is a likely outcome," Mr Quinn said.

"Even if I were to grant you bail you would be an unacceptable risk."

Police will allege the offences occurred between April and September last year.

Police allegedly discovered the child exploitation material when the man was arrested.

The man cannot be named to protect the identity of the alleged victim.

His case will next be heard on March 14.
