Search on hold for missing man off Fraser Island coast

A SEARCH for a man missing after falling overboard off Fraser Island was called off at 6pm last night but is expected to resume this morning.

The Tin Can Bay Coastguard and the Sunshine Coast RACQ CareFlight Rescue helicopter were among the emergency services called on to search for a man reported to have fallen overboard approximately 55km east of Fraser Island.

It is believed the man fell from the deck of the Liberia-flagged cargo ship Sea Amity (pictured), about 10.30pm Tuesday.

Tin Can Bay Coast Guard personnel joined the searching about 10.15am yesterday, soon after CareFlight's Maroochydore-based rescue helicopter joined the search being co-ordinated by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority.

The chopper crew completed a sweep of an assigned 100 nautical mile area but found no sign of the man before being forced to return to base to refuel.

Multiple other agencies, supplying fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft, were also involved in the search yesterday.
