Man jailed for life for brutal murder of his girlfriend

A MAN has been jailed for life for brutally murdering his girlfriend by pouring paint down her throat and burning her alive.

Anthony Porter, 33, admitted to killing his partner Andraya Lyons, 38, after a fight at her Christmas party last year.

Bristol Crown Court heard horrifying details of the fatal assault, which Ms Lyons' family said had left them completely shattered.

Porter barged into Ms Lyons' home on December 10 and attacked the mother of two with an iron, before forcing paint down her throat and dousing her in a flammable liquid.

He also placed gas canisters next to her and lit a fire. She was still alive, police said, and an autopsy later determined Ms Lyons had suffered 35 separate injuries.

Neighbours heard screaming on the night in question but it was only when they began to smell smoke that someone called the fire brigade.

Judge Peter Blair was damning in his sentencing statement, telling Porter he would spend the rest of life behind bars.

"The assault started on the porch and went into the living room. It is clear this is a sustained assault. She was screaming for you to get out."

Porter confessed to his family and then visited his mother's grave, before handing himself in to police, blaming his brutal actions on "five minutes of madness".

Ms Lyons' father Edward Webb told the court he was babysitting her two children on the night of the murder and described the "heartbreaking and difficult moment he had to tell the boys their mother was dead and wouldn't be coming home".
