Jailed over 6500 child porn files

A  TULLY man has received his third strike for child sex offences after he was caught with more than 6500 child pornography images and videos.

Lennon James Dawita, 24, came to police attention in October last year after his profile was found on a Russian image-sharing website.

"That profile included an email address and the defendant had posted that he wanted to trade links, pics, vids, 1/15, boys, girls, really after sleeping pics," Crown prosecutor Eddie Coker said.

"His profile also contained holding six explicit images."

Police contacted Dawita over the email. He told the officer he had links to child porn and attached four images of a naked girl aged under 10.

He admitted to trading child porn images using the internet and the dark web. He was found possessing 6280 images and 352 movie files.

The Cairns District Court was told that a large number of the images and movies were in the worst categories, which depict actual sex, sadism, humiliation or bestiality.

Dawita pleaded guilty to accessing child pornography, and distributing and possessing child exploitation material, between October and November last year.

He also pleaded guilty to breaching strict obligations under the Child Protection (Offender Reporting) Act.

He was jailed for three years with parole eligibility after 12 months. He has already spent 257 days in custody.

It is the third time Dawita has been convicted for child sex offences.

In 2016 he was convicted of possessing child pornography images and videos.

He was also previously convicted of indecent treatment against a child.

Mr Coker said Dawita "cannot or will not control himself" and there was a strong need for personal deterrence.

Barrister Josh Trevino, for Dawita, said his client had had a turbulent upbringing and received little or no education.

Mr Trevino said that while Dawita was caught with more images in this latest matter, it was not an escalation in relation to his initial offending against a child.

The court was told Dawita wanted to isolate himself from Tully and the internet on his release.
