Man gets suspended sentence after court bomb threat

A REDBANK Plains man has been given a wholly-suspended jail sentence after being found guilty of stalking an Ipswich magistrate and threatening to detonate a bomb as payback for "all you corrupt dogs".

Following a trial last week, Steven Roy Evans, 37, was found guilty of five of the nine offences he was charged with. He was acquitted of the other four charges.

The offences he was found guilty of included stalking and using a carriage service to make a hoax threat, to make a threat to kill and to make a threat to cause serious harm in February 2013.

This included sending a threatening message to the Ipswich court house.

He sent an email from Mt Ommaney saying he was going to detonate a bomb outside the Ipswich watchhouse and courthouse at 4pm that day "as payback for all you corrupt dogs".

During the trial, the court heard he had previously had disputes with the Victorian court system.

Evans was also found guilty of sending threats via a feedback form on the Queensland court system's website, including a threat that he would shoot a magistrate.

The trial went for five days and the jury retired on Friday afternoon and continued deliberating that night.

Evans was sentenced to four and a half years in jail, wholly suspended for five years.

He had spent more than three years in jail and this time was declared as time served.

Evans was also placed on a good behaviour bond for five years. - ARM NEWSDESK
