Snakebite ruled out as cause of Palmview death

UPDATE: A snakebite has been ruled out as the cause of death of a man found in the backyard of a Palmview home on Tuesday.

An Office of the State Coroner spokeswoman said the 10-year-old Nina Dr resident died of natural causes.

The possibility a snakebite had contributed to the man's passing was considered in the autopsy after what appeared to be two puncture marks were noticed on his left leg.

THURSDAY: A snakebite is being considered as a contributing factor in the death of a 70-year-old man at his Palmview home.

However, the chances of an unseasonal attack are regarded by the Office of the State Coroner as "very unlikely" ahead of the man's autopsy.

Suncoast Turf Supplies owner Lachlan Umsted had just finished unloading a delivery of turf at a home on Nina Dr about 2.50pm on Tuesday when he tried to contact the resident.

He couldn't find him at the home so he called him and was drawn to the rear of the property by the sound of the man's ringing phone.

Mr Umsted said he found the man unconscious.

"I called 000 straight away and started working on him," Mr Umsted said.

He said he performed CPR on the man for about 20 minutes until paramedics arrived and they took over for about another 30 minutes.

Despite their best efforts, the man could not be revived.

Mr Umsted said there had been discussion between himself and emergency services about what appeared to be two puncture marks on the man's left leg.

Despite the marks, Mr Umsted didn't believe it had been a snakebite.

He had a small search for any reptiles but none were seen.

"It looked like he was on his mower and maybe he had a heart attack."

Beerwah police officer Senior Constable Darrin Tomkins said a snakebite would be considered as a part of the autopsy.

A spokeswoman for the Office of the State Coroner confirmed the death had been referred to them.

She said after looking at the man's file that it was "very unlikely'' that his death was due to a snakebite.
