UPDATE: Police have confirmed that a man found dead in a Ruthven St house this morning was responsible for the sexual assault of two elderly Toowoomba women.

Detective Inspector David Isherwood said the 36-year-old was known to police, but he had no history of sexual assault.

EARLIER: Another attack on an elderly Toowoomba woman has unfolded this morning following a similar incident yesterday.

In a shocking twist, police found a man dead in a nearby Ruthven St residence while investigating the incident.

Police said about 4.15am, a man broke into an 80-year-old woman's home in North Toowoomba.

The woman was sexually assaulted by the man after she woke to find him standing in her bedroom.

The man then fled the scene after stealing property from the woman's home.

Yesterday morning, a 72-year-old woman was also sexually assaulted in her Drayton home.

Police attended a Ruthven St address following this morning's incident which they believed to have connections to the two attacks.

Inside the house they found the body of a man who had hanged himself.

Police could not confirm whether the deceased man was linked to the two incidents.

Investigations are continuing.
