Man desperate to help wife caught with 42kg of marijuana

A MAN who was desperate to help his cancer stricken wife through chemotherapy risked jail time when he was found with 42kg of marijuana which he'd grown himself at his hinterland property.

Geoffrey Robert Koll, 59, pleaded guilty in Maroochydore District Court to single counts of producing and possessing dangerous drugs and possessing anything used in the commission of a crime.

Koll was arrested following a series of raids across four properties including his at Gheerulla as well as others at Pacific Paradise, Yaroomba and Yandina.

The drugs and 26 plants found at Koll's home were about 42kg, but the usable amount was much less.

There were no allegations Koll dealt drugs.

The court heard Koll was "refreshingly honest" when speaking with police after his arrest and told them, "we didn't keep it much of a secret... I'm f---ing guilty as sin".

Koll fronted the Supreme Court in 2001 for similar offending and was also caught with one marijuana plant in 1984, although Judge Glen Cash noted that occasion was "not significant".

Judge Cash accepted Koll's "motivation was not greed" and he just wanted to help his wife.

Koll was ordered to a head sentence of 12 months' imprisonment, suspended immediately for an operational period of two years.

Judge Cash warned Koll that if he came back before the court for similar offending he would likely serve actual time behind bars.
