Man crushed to death by concrete pier

UPDATE: A man in his 50s had died after he was crushed by a concrete pier in an industrial incident in Queensland.

Just before 11am, emergency service weres called to Humes, on Ingham Road, the Bohle after a 53-year-old man was crushed between pylons about 27m long and weighed about 15-17 tonnes.

Townsville District Duty officer Senior Sergeant Joe Matheson said it appeared the worker was working on strapping the concrete pier to enable it to be transported to another location when another section of piers has rolled on top of him, killing the man instantly.

"It is pretty horrific for everyone involved," Sen-Sgt Matheson said.

"Investigations are underway and we've had CIB here and the Forensic Crash Unit will be attending shortly along with Work Place Health and Safety and they will prepare a report for the corner."

Sen-Sgt Matheson said the man may have been working in partnership with another man at the time of the incident.

"A lot of them are obviously close workmates with this gentleman and they are all obviously upset, I think the management here is organising for counselling to occur," he said.

It's understood the victim's family has been notified.
