Man pretends to be children’s hospital doctor

A MAN has faced court accused of impersonating a doctor for several months at a Queensland children's hospital and a Ronald McDonald House.

Nicholas Brett Delaney, 25, appeared in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Thursday on two counts of enter premises with intent and one count of attempted fraud.

The court heard Delaney had been pretending to be a doctor at Lady Cilento Children's Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House in South Brisbane since May until he was caught by security earlier this month.

Delaney, a wardsman, was not employed at either centre.

Court documents show the charges against Delaney relate to the alleged theft of a lanyard from Ronald McDonald House and an attempt to obtain a security pass for the hospital.

Children's Health Queensland Hospital and Health Service chief executive Fionnagh Dougan said preliminary investigations by the hospital indicated Delaney had no interaction with patients.

"A review of security systems will be conducted at Lady Cilento Children's Hospital," Ms Dougan said in a statement.

Delaney did not comment as he left court.

He had pleaded guilty to the three charges, but magistrate Stuart Shearer adjourned the case to next month and urged Delaney to seek legal advice. "It is hardly a trivial offence to be impersonating a doctor at a children's hospital over an extended period of time," Mr Shearer said.

"You should understand the seriousness of the offences." The case will return to court on January 29.

Ronald McDonald House, a charity which provides children undergoing medical treatment and their families with accommodation, has been contacted for comment.
