Man caught driving car that had been stolen to cover a debt

A 35-YEAR-OLD man was caught driving around in a car that had been stolen as collateral to settle a debt.

The man behind the wheel, Wesley John Figura appeared at Ipswich Magistrates Court this week to plead guilty to an unlawful use of a motor vehicle charge.

Defence lawyer Amy Little said another man had given Figura the vehicle to look after.

The man told Figura that he had taken possession of the vehicle as collateral because its owner owed him money.

About 10 days after the vehicle was stolen, the victim spotted his car being driven around. He later sighted the car again, this time parked at a Brassall address where Figura was living.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Jo Colston said the sighting was reported to police on March 31 and Figura was arrested.

Ms Little said her client claimed to have serviced and repaired the car while it was in his possession.

She said Figura had not contemplated his decision to retain the vehicle and described her client's offending as "senseless".

Ms Little said her client had a criminal history but that it contained no convictions for similar offending.

Magistrate Barry Cosgrove said Figura needed to "exercise more common sense" in the future.

Figura was convicted and fined $600.
