Man attacks girlfriend's son

A MAN who assaulted a 15-year-old boy twice in one day was ordered by Gympie Magistrates Court to go to anger management counselling.

The court heard that the man, 34, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the victim, had been in a relationship with the boy’s mother, and began his tirade of abuse the morning after drinking heavily all night.

The court heard the man woke the boy at 6am and physically assaulted him once they were both outside and while the mother was still asleep. The boy and his mother fled the premises, but when they went home the man barged in and attacked again. He was later charged with two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm.

Defence solicitor Leanne Gordon said her client had been drinking while on quit-smoking medication, and this contributed to his explosive outbursts.

She backed this by submitting clinical evidence about the side-effects of taking the medication and a report from the man’s psychologist.

Magistrate Maxine Baldwin said she would not tolerate violence on minors in any form of misguided parenting and placed the man on probation for six months with the condition he attend counselling.
