Charges of threatening violence and rape are "a lot of crap"

A MIDDLE-AGED man accused of threatening to rape students at a Bellbird Park primary school has claimed the charges against him are "a lot of crap".

At Ipswich Magistrates Court yesterday, the 52-year-old man appeared in the dock to face charges of assault with intent to rape, trespassing and two counts of threatening violence.

Queensland law prevents the man being named until his case progresses to a higher court.

Police alleged the man unlawfully entered a state school on Wednesday at 11.20am, approached a group of students and threatened to rape them.

It was further alleged he grabbed an 11-year-old female student's arm with intent to rape her. It was reported that after the girl pulled away, the Bellbird Park man allegedly left the area and police arrested him later that night.

No one was physically injured as a result of the incident.

The accused told the court he had walked through the school to "get grog for a mate" but that the crimes against him were false.

"It's a lot of crap," he told Magistrate Donna MacCallum.

The man said he intended to apply for bail but had no solicitor to represent him.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Brad Dick said he would oppose bail because of the serious nature of the charges. The man was held in custody and his matter was adjourned to today.
