Man accused of raping work mate’s girlfriend

A 37-YEAR-OLD man accused of raping a workmate's girlfriend has appeared in Toowoomba Magistrates Court.

The man, looking dishevelled and sporting two black eyes and a bandaged left forehead, was not required to enter any plea to the one count of rape.

It is believed the man sustained the injuries soon after the alleged incident at the weekend.

He cannot be named for legal reasons.

His de facto wife sat in the back of the court while duty solicitor Claire Graham applied for bail on the accused's behalf.

The court heard the man and his workmate lived in the same street of a small country town to Toowoomba's north-west where the alleged incident occurred about midnight Saturday.

It is believed the 28-year-old complainant woman does not live in the town but was there with her boyfriend prior to the alleged incident.

While no specific details of the allegations were aired in the court, Ms Graham noted by police material that it appeared all concerned at the residence had been intoxicated when police arrived at the scene.

She said her client instructed he would be contesting the charge and he had raised the issue of consent.

If granted bail, her client was prepared to quit his job and immediately leave the area and live with his parents in a central Queensland town.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Des Neijens objected to the bail application, telling the court the evidence against the accused man was strong.

Snr Const. Neijens said the allegations were serious and submitted the accused man was a flight risk.

Noting the man had minimal criminal history, Magistrate Graham Lee granted bail on strict conditions including the man residing with his parents during the remand period and having no contact at all with the complainant woman.

Mr Lee adjourned the case for committal mention back in the same court in September.
