Major airline adds new direct flights for Sunshine Coast

A MAJOR Australian airline has delivered a boost to Coast locals and tourists with extra direct flights being delivered.

Qantas has introduced direct flights between Melbourne and the Sunshine Coast for this festive season, to cater for the high demand for flights.

Bookings opened at midnight last night, and the flights will operate five return QantasLink services a week, from December 16, 2017-January 28, 2018.

The dual-cabin, 110-seat 717 jet will operate on Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, ferrying passengers directly to and from Melbourne and the Sunshine Coast.

It's an increase on the four return flights per week between Melbourne and the Sunshine Coast offered last season, which was a result of the success of last season's launch of the direct flights.

Over the six week silly season 30 return flights will operate, making 6600 seats available on the route for travellers.

QantasLink CEO John Gissing said they were "always looking for opportunities to provide our customers with more choice at the time of year they want to travel".

"Our direct flights between Melbourne and the Sunshine Coast proved really popular last year, so we're pleased to offer them again for a second summer with even more services," he said.

QantasLink flies year-round directly between Sydney and the Sunshine Coast, and these additional Christmas period direct connections to Melbourne will bring QantasLink's offering to 18,040 seats in total to and from the Sunshine Coast over this year's peak holiday season.
