IT'S probably not well advised to come to court dressed like you are going to play football or have just left the beach.
Words of wisdom too late for Jai Russell Eliott who faced Ipswich Magistrates Court this week dressed in thongs, shorts and a singlet.
The 23-year-old is one of many people who each day visit the Ipswich Courthouse dressed in what one magistrate has deemed "disrespectful" attire.
Eliott had come to court to plead guilty to offences of assault or obstruct police and committing a public nuisance.
Before he was sentenced though, fed-up magistrate Barry Cosgrove scorned the young offender on his poor wardrobe choice.
"If you were going to someone's wedding or funeral would you at least wear a shirt?" he asked Eliott.
When Eliott said he would, Mr Cosgrove told him he then "obviously didn't regard the court as very important".
"You need to understand that in our society, you have to pay respect to lots of other people," Mr Cosgrove said.
"When you come to court, you should show appropriate respect.
"If you want to behave like some sort of grub, you'll be treated like a grub."
Eliott was already in Mr Cosgrove's bad books after the magistrate observed him grinning to his mate in court while his charges were being read.
Police prosecutor Senior Sergeant Kevin Carmont said on March 15, Eliott had obstructed police while they were pursuing his friend on foot.
Sen Sgt Carmont said Eliott also shouted abuse at the officers and resisted arrest when police tried to take him into custody.
At the time of the offence, Eliott had been on a suspended sentence for another matter.
Defence lawyer Trevor Hoskin said Eliott was drunk at the time of the incident and was remorseful for his actions.
Mr Cosgrove had trouble believing that though.
"I don't think he regrets anything," he told Eliott.
"You seem to think this is a big joke."
Eliott was sentenced to four months in jail and released on parole.
He was also fined $300 and had his suspended sentence extended by six months.
