Mackay's mayor does ice bucket challenge

MACKAY's Mayor, Deirdre Comerford, has taken part in the ALS Ice bucket challenge.

After being nominated by local radio hosts Jay and Dave from SEAfm the mayor stood in front of the camera and gracefully declined to take part.

"Look it's a really good cause and I do support the cause and I will give a personal donation but really getting involved in a stunt like that when I'm the mayor sort of not becoming of the position of mayor, I don't believe, to do it. So I won't be taking part in the ice bucket challenge," Mayor Comerford said.

Her husband, Brett, then drenched her with a bucket of ice water mid-sentence.

"I can't believe you just did that, there's ice in it.

"How long do you want to be married to me for?"

How the challenge began:

The Ice Bucket Challenge for ALS/MND is a social media campaign that was initiated by Pete Frates, a former Boston College captain who is living with motor neurone disease (MND) in the US.

Since Peter Frates posted his challenge online, the Ice Bucket Challenge quickly went viral and is now spreading across Australia's MND, sporting and entertainment communities.

The rules of the challenge

1. Fill a bucket (or larger container) with water and ice
2. Tip it over your head
3. Challenge three other people to take the Ice Bucket Challenge within 48 hours
4. If nominees don't take the Ice Bucket Challenge within 48 hours they make a donatation to an MND charity.
Of course you can take the challenge AND make a donation and ask the people you nominate to do the same.
