M1 ‘car park’ in 60km of gridlock

THE entire M1 resembles a carpark this afternoon with holiday traffic causing 60km of jams stretching from Beenleigh in the north right down to Tugun on the QLD/NSW border.

Southbound lanes are in gridlock as day-trippers flock to the beach or down south.

Traffic is barely moving from Robina to Tugun with it taking more than an hour to drive the 23km stretch

Congestion is also heavy southbound from Beenleigh to Helensvale.

Traffic navigation services predict it will take nearly 1.5 hrs to travel from Beenleigh to the NSW border in the current congestion.

A multi-car crash northbound in the Tugun tunnel is also causing headaches.

The nose-to tail crash happened at 11.51am and no one was injured but the cars are blocking lanes.

Motorists are advised to expect long delays.
