GYMPIE couple Curly and Maida Lewis celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary at the Phoenix Hotel last Thursday with close friends and family.

But the celebrations 60 years in the making did not end there.

The following Sunday, the couple was again in the spotlight at a special function at the Silky Oak Tea Gardens.

Performer Billy Guy provided the live entertainment and backdrop for plenty of laughs and a stroll down memory lane.

Curly and Maida married in Dunedin, New Zealand after meeting through Maida's best friend, Shirley Webb.

The couple later moved to Wanaka in 1964 with children Jeffrey, Tony, Karen and Alistair.

Curly and Maida's children live far apart; Karen resides in Gympie, Jeffrey remains in Dunedin, Tony in Perth and Alistair at Munruben.

A building career occupied Curly for most of his working life while Maida worked at a hotel in Wanaka as an accountant. She also taught at the local school teaching typing and shorthand.

With three of the couple's four children moving to Australia, Curly and Maida pulled up stumps and decided to take their lead.

The big move came in October 2005 and the pair fell in love with the Gympie region, moving into their new home on the Southside.

"They just said it felt right and had a nice feel," Karen said.

"Dad did not take long to get back into his shooting out at Sexton. Mum and Dad love to socialise - they play 500, canasta and mum is known as the card shark."

Curly and Maida are content with their retirement in Gympie and from the loving group of family and friends to celebrate their latest milestone together, the future is a happy one.
